In general terms, a liqueur is a distilled spirit that is infused with various flavours, oils, herbs and extracts although these days this distinction is blurred by the popularity of flavoured gins, whiskies, rums and vodkas. The earliest example is Chartreuse which dates back to the 13th Century and there is now a bewildering choice of flavours, strengths, colours and consistencies, perfect for any occasion.
